League of Women Voters of Volusia County School Board Candidate Forum
Short claimed an endorsement from Moms for Liberty, an organization of growing influence in the wake of debates over school openings and required masks. The Volusia County chapter released a statement to The News-Journal explaining that its members have been attending school board meetings since Oct. 27, 2020, when Volusia schools required masks for students, prior to state law making them optional. Moms for Liberty Volusia hosted a candidates' forum for District 3 on June 2, after which the group settled on its endorsement of Short, lauding her "conservative values" and regular attendance of board meetings over the past decade. "She was fighting for parents’ rights and on behalf of teachers years before she decided to run for school board," the statement reads. "She has served on PTA and DAC as a leader and volunteers at schools as a parent volunteer, and now is a (much needed) substitute teacher regularly." Moms for Liberty Volusia is actively lobbying DeSantis to weigh in on the District 3 race and support Short. "Other District 3 candidates have not attended school board meetings or have only come on occasion to make an appearance. Moms for Liberty Volusia cannot put faith in a candidate that can’t be bothered to show up for a seat they are running for. We hope that Gov. DeSantis ... will also take school board meeting attendance into consideration and remember that those candidates with the biggest contributions are not necessarily the best candidates to actually do the tough job at hand to fight for the students, staff, parents, and community."

Volusia County School Board approves interim superintendent contract; evaluation for its attorney coming soon? - Ormond Beach Observer
“One member of the public spoke in regards to Hazel's employment agreement. Kim Short, a parent who runs the Facebook group, Volusia County School Forum, and candidate to represent District 3 on the School Board, said she has sat through the firing of the past three superintendents since she began attending School Board meetings in 2012. While she approved of Hazel's appointment, she urged the board to tread carefully and include the community in the selection of a new superintendent. "Regardless of what the result is, getting a community behind somebody who's going to be your new leader is critical to their success and to all of us feeling like we can be a cohesive unit to moving forward," Short said. "I don't think that there's anything more important to the success of this district than what we do next as far as leadership goes."

Volusia Schools Hope to Stop Budget Ax at Classroom Door
“Kim Short and Joanna Kaney Olivari showed up at a Volusia County School Board meeting one week after voters rejected a school property tax hike in November, opposing any budget cuts that would harm their children's education and volunteering to help raise money if needed.” "As a parent, I want the cuts to stay away from the classroom," said Short, who has three children at Sweetwater Elementary in Port Orange. "If parents aren't there and not standing up for their kids, who is going to stand up for them?"
